There are 10 blanks in the following passage(s). For each blank there are five choices marked A, B, C, D and E. Choose the ONE that best fits into the passage(s).

Adults are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practised in the meantime. A man who has not had an opportunity to go swimming for years can 36 swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can got on a bicycle after several decades and still 37 away. A mother who has not 38 the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “ Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or recite the story of Cinderella or Snow White.

One explanation is the law of over learning, which can be stated as following: 39 we have learned something, additional learning increases the 40 of time we will remember it.

In childhood, we usually continue to practise such skills as swimming, bicycle riding long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and 41 ourselves of poems such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella or Snow White. We no only learn but 42 .

The law of over learning explains why cramming (突擊學(xué)習(xí)) for an examination, 43 it may result in a passing grade, is not a 44 way to learn a school course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little over learning; 45 , is usually a good investment toward the future.

B 42. A. recite B. overlearn C. research D. improve

A 43. A. though B. so C. if D. after

C 44. A. convenient B. demanding C. satisfactory D. swift

C 45. A. at most B. by the way C. on the other hand D. in the end

III. Reading Comprehension

There are two reading passages in this section. Each passage is followed by 5 questions. Each question is provided with four answers marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the ONE that best answers the question.

Passage 1

Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology , laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying? how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “ Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

50.What can we infer from the passage? D

Passage 2

There is an English saying: “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into(調(diào)查) laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial(有益的).

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress(緊張;壓力) and pain.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

51. The underlined phrase “took the saying seriously” in the 1st paragraph probably means “___A_____”.

A. treat as important B. treat as interesting

C. treat as dangerous D. treat as funny

52. Doctors have proved the following except that ___B____.

A. smiling does good to health B. laughter can be tolerated

C. there is a way to reduce pain D. laughter can work the muscles in the feet

53. The main idea of the passage is ___D____.

A. laughter and physical exercises have similar effects on the human body

B. smile can produce the same effects as laughter

C. pain can be reduced by laughter

D. laughter is the best medicine

54. The underlined word “diminish” is similar to “___C___”.

A. test B. stop C. reduce D. increase

55. Doctors hold laughter clinics ____B___.

A. to give better condition to their patients

B. in order to improve patients’ health

C. to make patients smile

D. to prove smile and laughter have the same effect
